2. INTRODUCTION TO DRAGON SLAYER 1
----------------------------------
There are sequels available on GameBoy (Dragon Slayer 2: Dorasure Gaiden),
on NES (Dragon Slayer 4: Drasle Family) on Genesis (Dragon Slayer and
Dragon Slayer II: Legend of Heroes), on MSX (Dragon Slayer 4, Dragon Slayer 4 -
Drasle Family), on Turbo CD (Dragon Slayer, Dragon Slayer 2). I don't know
if all of these games are linked together, since I don't understand japanese.
Released 08/12/1990 in Japan, Dragon Slayer 1 is a relative unknown game
by a relative unknown company. Most of you will only know it from one of those
32-in-1-Catridges or by playing it on an emulator. I actually know it from a
32-in-1-Catridge. At first, I found the game rather boring. But after some time
playing it, I found it pretty fun. If someone actually has a cover scan or
something else regarding Dragon Slayer 1, please don't hesinstate to email me
about it (I've never seen an original copy of this game).
In Japan the game must have been succesful, because it spawned many sequels.

4. GENERAL GAMEPLAY
-------------------
Status:
Heart = HP
Sword = Attack Power
Man = EXPerience Points/Defense
Coin = Can be traded for HP
Potion = Needed for some spells
Crown = Needed to complete a Level ("Phase")
You will stumble over various things on your journey:
Cross: Monsters can't pass it. If you take it, Monsters also won't
attack you, but don't get surrounded!
Orb: Does not do anything when carried, but can be traded for
Attack Power at your home.
Coins: Can be traded for HP at your home.
Ring: When equipped you can move blocks.
Warp: Teleports you to another Warp on the map.
Potions: Needed to cast this spells:
JUMP, RETURN, MAP, FREEZE, FLASH, FLY
Home: You can heal yourself here (EXP = HP) or trade coins and orbs.
Chest: To open it you must carry the key. Contains either a Coin,
a Potion, a Cross or a Grim Reaper.
Key: Opens chests, can be used infinite times.
Grim Reaper: Sometimes appears when you open a chest.
You can't cast spells as long as the Grim Reaper
follows you! To kill him only move over a cross.
Crowns: There are 4 of them in each Phase. To get the crowns, you must beat
the Dragon guarding them. Get all 4 to your home to win a Phase.
Ghost: Steals your carried items, also steals dropped items (including crowns!)
and places them somewhere else on the map. Can't fly over a Cross.
Tombstone: Monsters emerge from it in the first Phase.
When you reach a certain number of EXP, you will learn spells in this order:
JUMP: First spell you'll learn. Teleports you to the last item the ghost
dropped after stealing it. Requires potion.
RETURN: You get teleported to your home. Requires potion.
MAP: You can see an eagle-eye-view of the map. Requires potion.
BREAK: Destroys a block in the direction you are facing. No potion required.
KICK: Kick a block in the direction you are facing. You can also hurt enemys
by kicking a block against them. Useless spell, use BREAK instead.
No potion required.
FREEZE: Freezes all enemys around the hero. Enemys can't attack or move while
freezed. Useless when FLASH is acquired. Potion required.
FLASH: Paralyses ALL enemys on the map for a certain amount of time.
Enemys can't move or attack while paralyzed. Potion required.
FLY: Transform into a bird. As a bird, you can fly over every obstacle, but
only for a certain amount of time. Notice the changing BGM :)
Potion required.
You start each Phase near your home with 1000 HP, 500 Attack Power, 500 EXP
and no spells. Your first task in each Phase is to find a sword. Without
a sword, you will only deal 10 Damage to each enemy (and the easiest
enemy has 1500 HP!). So first find a sword. After this, you can start
to power up. To attack an monster, simply touch it.
General Rules:
If your EXP are higher than a Monsters, you can beat it,
but don't forget to raise your attack power before!
If your EXP are twice the EXP of the Monster's, you'll only
lose 10 HP per hit.
There is no HP limit, so trade coins for HP at your home as
much as you like!
The game itself has only 2 Levels (!!) and a rather crappy ending...
5. MONSTERS
-----------
If you kill a Level 1 Monster, a Level 2 Monster will emerge from a
tombstone. So if you kill a Zombie (Level 1 Monster), a Octopus
(Level 2 Monster) will emerge from a tombstone and so on. Also weaker
Monster respawn from time to time. Many Monsters can steal coins, while
some of the stronger Monsters (Vampires for example) can also drain
attack power and EXP permanently!
