Orphen: Scion of Sorcery [By rpgclassics.com]
There are 3 different story lines in this game, but my walkthrough is split up into 4 different sections. You'll have to start on the Ship part of the walkthrough since thats where the story begins. In that section I'll explain how to go onto the Sephy, Zeus, or Mar part of the Walkthrough. Also note that I won't tell you to save. When the games asks if you want to save, do so.
- The Ship
- Sephy
- Zeus
- Mar
The Ship
After watching the opening and that long dialogue (get use to the long dialogue) you take control of Orphen. Visit some of the other cabins and watch the cutscenes, while opening the treasure chests that you'll come across. At the end of the hallway is a room with 3 chests. Two contain items, while one is a switch that will flood the area. The game will then ask you to save. You might as well since your getting ready to go up against your first boss. After you've activated the switch, go into some of the other rooms that you might not have visited. When your ready to progress with the story, enter the last room on the right. Watch the cutscene with Volcan and Dorton, and prepare for your first Boss. BOSS FIGHT! Ingorudo & Garjics Like all bosses that you fight this early in a game, Ingorudo's nothing but a pushover. Simply use your projectile attack and shield up when he attacks. Do that and he'll be gone soon. After he's dead, his body will release some Garjics one you. Use a fully charged Bite of Lighting to take them out. A few might survive so you'll have to pick them off with the Hand of Pyro. After that go up the stairs and into the room on the right. Snag the goodies and leave. Go to the room thats above the stairs and to the left. Magnus and Cleo will each go different ways. It doesn't matter which you choose. When you go outside there will be a small swarm of flying bugs. Take care of them with either your projectiles or sword. After that go up to the end of the ship to find Cleo and Magnus. Now is where you choose the story lines. Here's a small little list to explain things: BOSS FIGHT! Gariga This sea serpent is a bit tougher to hit than Ingorudo. You'll be fighting him on a mast. There are only 3 and you'll have to destroy him before he destroys the masts. When he jumps past you, use the Hand of Pyro on him, and be sure to shield up against his attacks. Tap the cirlce button to do some damage to him right when he's diving into the water. Repeat this process until he's dead. |

Sephy
After watching that scene, grab Sephy's Ball of Shadows attack from the chest that's just past the giant tree from your starting point. After that proceed toward the tower. Time to play as Sephy for a minute. Make your way to the vines by jumping from one piece of the floating wood to the other. When you beging to climb the vines follow this nice little path: up, right, up, left, up, right till end, then jump off onto the ledge. If you followed this correctly, Sephy will jump into the tower and open the gate.
When you enter you are faced with some traps. These traps just happen to be slinging blades. Sounds fun doesn't it? Use Orphen to stand in front of the blades (not too close), and when they go up run like hell! After the third blade there is a treasure chest off to the side. Get it then proceed past the final blade and hop onto the elevator to be taken to the next floor of the tower. Here you are faced with another trap. This one isn't so difficult. Just jump on over to the other side, snag the treasure, and hop on the elevator. Walk around the bottom part of this room and get the goodies from the two chests. This puzzle/trap isn't hard at all. Keep jumping on the cogs that spin around. Jump from one to the highest one you can reach. Becareful not to fall or you'll plummet down to the last floor. Keep doing this until you can jump onto the high ledge.
Now you're back where you started...only in the present. I'm not gonna tell you why the area is titled with "(present)" since the game will explain it all in a bit of time. Look at your area map and go to the dead end, while collecting the treasures you come across. The path will be split in two. Take the left one and grab the goodies then take the right path to progress further.
Explore a bit and obtain what little treasures there are. Watch out for the icicles. They do damage so I suggest you take them out with your projectile or sword attack. Continue on until you find another piece of the egg.
Explore a bit and snag your treasures from...the treasure chests. After that, head back to your starting point. You will then gain control of Sephy. Jump from platform to platform to reach the Curin Tree. Don't forget to grab the items from the chests along the way. When you've reached the tree, hit the switch. The switch will reveal a new path. Take the new path that leads to a few treasures, and the exit.
Go up the pathway using the many bridges. And lets not forget to grab our goodies, shall we?
Follow this nice little path until you come to a wall with a small hole in it. Walk up to it to being all that dialogue. After that prepare for a VERY dangerous trap. Two hits from it and you can kiss your ass good-bye. Meaning you get to listen all that dialogue...again. There's only one way to get over this trap, and thats to try and jump through the gap that both rows of spikes have made. Timing is everything. Once you've gotten over it jump over the rest of the spikes that aren't has deadly. Use items if you must since I know you don't wanna listen to that dialogue and have to try and jump over that first trap again. When you reach the end of this area, jump down the pit and continue onward. Follow this path to another pit. Jump down it and examine the bull-headed statue. Watch the scene. Think you know the riddle? I sure as hell do, but even if I told you it wouldn't do any good. Go back up toward the pit where you'll see a scene that involves Volcan and Dorton. Get up there and "talk" with them for the answer, and head back to the statue. Looks like we have a new path to follow. Snag the goodies and continue. Look at all the traps that someone set up. These traps are actually pretty easy. When you get to the axes, step right in front of them and when they swing to a side you run past the swinging axes. Repeat this for all of the axes you encounter. On the next floor You'll come across more axes...and giant rolling boulders. Tell me you don't feel like Indiana Jones. Anyway, just becareful not to let either of them hit you. On to the next floor! just hug the wall until you get to the exit to avoid the falling spikes. On the next floor there are more swinging axes. Try not to hit the weak spots on the floor. It will send you back to the falling spikes area. Continue the path and be prepared for a... BOSS FIGHT! Minotaur This boss can be extremely difficult. You can't use your projectiles or anything else on him except your sword, seeing as how nothing else will do damage. Shield up at the start of the fight to avoid his fire explosion...thing. When he starts to charge swing your sword at him. Do this enough and it will knock him back. Sounds easy but its not. If he manages to push you back far enough...you fall a long way down a pit...resulting in instant death. It might take a few tries to get rid of him, but its worth it.
Cross the bridge and into the rest house. Talk to everyone upstairs until they leave. Then head back across the bridge into the tomb. Talk to Sephy to get your adventure rolling again.
After reuniting with your group, that old lady will send you plummeting....into her nice little dungeon. Using Magnus, jump on the weakened part of the floor until he falls threw. The next are might seem a little difficult since Magnus can't attack. Meaning you will have to avoid all of the monsters. Grab the goodies while hitting switches until you reach a big area. Just repeatedly jump on the platform to reach the next area of the dungeon. FInd a weakened wall inbetween two flickering flames. Have Magnus push it until it reveals a new passage. Lets proceed. Just jump on the weakened parts of the floor again at the end of the area. You should now be in an area full of paths and stairs. There are big hands that will appear out from the darkness so watch out for them.
I hope your use to dodging those falling spikes and swinging axes by now, because there's plenty. Continue avoiding traps and picking up all treasures. Hit the first switch that you come across. This will move one of an iron boulder. Do NOT hit the second switch. You don't wanna get smacked by an iron boulder do you? Continue your path until you find a pit. Jump down and be prepared for a puzzle. When you reach the next area, collect all the treasures, then go find Sephy and Magnus, who tell Orphen to get inside a cage. Do just that to move the cage. After that, look for a cage with a statue in it. Push the statue out of it to move that cage as well. Find a room that has a buncha cages, then jump on them until you reach a scene that shows a cage rising up to reveal stairs. It's the same room that contained the Dance of Wind, so return to the room and go down the stairs. You will now enter hallways with arrow shooting statues. Collect the treasures and proceed. Don't bother worrying over the arrows since they cause very little damage.
Push the statue that has a head into the corner to create a stairway that will lead up to the next level. Repeat this process on each level until you reach the foot of the temple. Walk around the base of the temple until you reach a strange looking block. Sephy takes over and you will now have to lead her to the top. The first puzzle is easy. Go from one side of the room to the next, but beware of the walls that pop up. They can easily block you in (the most frustrating part of this puzzle). If you end up completely stuck, hit a switch to start the puzzle over again. Otherwise, push the block on the opposite end of the room out, and return to the outside of the temple. Walk around to the other side of the temple, and climb up the block Sephy just pushed out. Look for an entrance to another room on the second floor of the temple. This puzzle may seem a bit more trickier than the last, but its nothing you can't handle. Jump on the ledge and push the first block off of it. This happens to make a wall pop up. Circle around the wall to activate another pop up wall. Now push the first block to make a pathway for the second block. Jump up behind the second block and use it to reach the next exit. Just jump up to the next level, walk around, and prepare for a... BOSS FIGHT! Statue & Skeletons Don't bother going for the Skeletons. They will just continue to revive themselves until the Statue is out of the picture, so take it out. Lock onto it and attack with the Hand of Pyro. It will hit the Skeletons, but Magnus and Sephy will help you out as well. They'll attack the Skeletons, giving you a path to the Statue. When this happens, charge up your sword and attack it like there's no tomorrow! Sooner or later you'll destroy it.
Talk to everyone in the rest house until they leave again, then head back to the tomb area to rejoin Sephy. Head through the new door to continue. You have plenty of time for Sephy to make a pathway to the exit, so make sure you grab the Herb. This item will restore all of your HP.
As Magnus, proceed down the tower. The traps are the same as the first time around, so you should be able to get to the bottom with ease. When you do reach the bottom, flip all the switches and continue on. As Orphen and Sephy, make your way down to the bottom of the tower where Magnus was. You'll find him missing, and you will also find some monsters. After you get rid of them, look for a passage behind the sand to continue on. After you enter the passage, keep going until you find a ladder. Find Magnus and some treasure, then move onward. BOSS FIGHT! Golnath This boss is no different than Gariga. Use the exact same tactics with him. You can also hit the falling rocks, which will break and hit Golnath. Just make sure he's dead before he destroys all of your foot holds, that will lead to instant death. |

Zeus
You should be back on the ship. Nothing much to do here. Before you move along, be sure to pick up the Sword of Justice. Talk to Zeus, watch the scene, and kill Gariga for the second time. That didn't take too long did it?
Collect the treasures that you find, then use the glowing portal as an elevator. On the next floor is a library maze and treasures. Examine the book on a shelf thats alone, to continue. On the next floor use Cleo to jump onto the top of shevles and barrels to reach treasures and a switch. You'll be able to leave the tower once you hit the switch.
Go through the ship and grab the booty. To get to the next ship, climb the ladders to the top and jump (or climb) onto the platform below. Hold off the monsters until Zeus tears a hole in the ship for you to escape through, then continue through the ship. Hold off more monsters, then take controll of Zeus and use his sword to destroy an old mast, to create a bridge for Orphen and Cleo.
After seeing the ghost of what Zeus beleives to be his daughter, explore the floor to find some treasure. To continue, push aside a tombstone on one of the lower levels to reveal a path to another grave. When your inside the grave, you'll find something very interesting. Return to the top of the building and continue your journey. Watch out for the crumbling floor, since it will slow you down. When you reach the end of the hallway, search behind the stairway for a treasure. After nabbing the treasure, you'll find more traps...which are spikes. Watch their movements and run when you feel it's safe, jumping over small pits that pose a threat as well. At the end of the traps, you'll leave the building and keep going. BOSS FIGHT! Jigeos & Zandor Equip the Bite of Lightning, Bolt of Thunder, and Sword of Justice attacks. There will be two tubes spitting out Jigeos. Get rid of the two tubes, concentrating on one at a time. After both of them are gone, get rid of the Jigeos with Bite of Lightning. Now you must face Zandor, who is a giant spider. When he sets up his defensive webs, charge up Bolt of Thunder to get rid of them. Watch out for his attacks though, since they'll stop you from being able putting up your shield. After his webs fall, charge up your sword and beat him senseless. Repeat as needed.
Same as usual. Talk to everyone in the rest house until they leave, talk to Zeus, and continue onward.
Use Orphen to activate the first switch, by waiting until the wheels show their gaps, then jump through to the next stone. Zeus will have a turn after you activate the first switch. Use Zeus to get to a large block, then have him push it into the water to continue. For the last switch, use Orphen to jump on the spinning logs to get to another switch. Activating it completes this area.
Collect the items and proceed through the "maze" which is just one straight pathway to the next tower.
Explore the area until you find a passage leading to the next area.
Watch the pattern of the falling balls. Head to the switch when you feel that its safe. In the next part of the area, watch out for the moving walls so they don't end up pushing you into lava. After the moving walls, you once again face swinging axes. However, this time they are kinda hard to see, and if you proceed recklessly you might be cut down very quickly. After the axes, you are face with falling boulders. As Zeus, get to the top two switches that are located parallel from each other. In order to get there you'll have to duck into the sides of the walls while collecting treasure. If the balls hit you twice, your gone. So mkae sure you heal if you need to. Afterwards watch this amusing cutscene and get ready for a... BOSS FIGHT! Doppleganger Be sure that you have Armor of Purity equiped. When he attacks use the Armor of Purity to reflect it back at him so that it reveals his true form. When he shifts into either Orphen, Zeus, or Magnus, DO NOT ATTACK HIM! Doing so will only harm the character that he has transformed into. If you kill the Doppleganger (even if you have more health than he does) when he looks like Orphen, your dead as well.
Do the same as always.
Grab the goods then go down the sand pit to the next level. You'll have to jump around to move in this area. Proceed toward another sand pit to get to the next level. On this level you will find a large immobile monster in the center of the room. Destroy its four sides to move on, but be careful of the smaller monsters which crawl within the sand. On the final level, use the rising sand dunes to jump up and reach a sand pit. This sand pit takes you to a new area.
Chase the woman up to the summit of the mountain to continue onward. After the bridge breaks, use Orphen to walk around to Zeus and Cleo. Becareful of the falling rocks. They don't domuch damage, but they can get annoying.
Just use Zeus to knock down craked pillars, to make a bridge to the mountain summit. BOSS FIGHT! Zelton When the battle begins, attack with projectiles and guard against his attacks. When Zeus cuts him open, hit it with everything you've got! Also beware of the tentacles. When you see them charging up, shield up. |

Mar
Yep. You're here....again. Get rid of Gariga for the last time and move onward.
You'll awaken to find that you are stranded on a small island with Cleo. Examine the steel door to find that you're trapped. Proceed up the heill with Cleo. Go up trees and climb vines until you find a piece of the crystal egg. After you are warped to morning, go up the left vine, snag the treasure, go back, and climb up the right vine. Now you'll be warped back to the present....geez...that was fast. Find Mar and bring him with you. Go through the steel door at the top of the mountain, and climb down to the other steel door to find an irritated Orphen waiting for you. After a short argument over Mar's predicament, use Orphen to go back up to where Mar was located. From there retrace Cleo's path to continue on with the game.
Head up the stairs and throw the switch to open the gates. Follow Mar to another closed gate. The switch to thos gate isn't too far away from it. After opening the gate, follow Mar to the music machine. After a short battle...the machine breaks! This....doesn't look good. Proceed up the right side of the music machine and flick the switch. Return to the left side of the music machine, go up its stairs, and you can now cross the bridge which the switch made. Continue on the path until you reach two more switches. If you flick the first switch, another bridge will be made and you can continue on. But if you want, you can flick both switches, go back and flick the first switch, go down the music machine and get two more items, (although they aren't important), then go back and flick all the switches again to proceed. After hitting the second switch, continue on until you leave the area. After that proceed down the mountain untile you reach a river that seems impossible to cross. The little Mar will suggest to let him climb the mountain and push the boulder off the cliff. Heres how you get to it:
Time to find the crystal egg fragment. Take the set of stairs to your left and continue down them until you reach an open space. Go up the next set of stairs you see to reach where you saw the glowing fragment before. Examine it to be transported to...night time? Well that was a big time leap! Anywho, time to find another piece. Retrace your steps and find the large stairwell that you passed earlier. head up it to find treasure and another egg fragment. Examine the egg again be transported to a rainy night. Go back down the stairs and continue to find a bridge. Cross it.
As Mar, try to reach the top of the mountain. Watch out for the falling boulers though. They don't hurt you that much but they can get very anoyying. Just reach the top of the mountain and prepare for a... BOSS FIGHT! Zafeum Unleash some projectiles to get this battle going. When he flys away the battle gets tricky. You'll end up having to guess where he's gonna land. You do this by targeting the area where you think he will land. If your right use the Hand of Pryo. If your wrong you better shield up. After he's been damaged enough, he'll come in for a encounter. When this happens, shield up against his attacks, and when you see an opening attack with the Bite of Lighting then shield up again. Repeat this whole process until hes been annihiliated.
Same as usually. Talk to everyone in the rest house until they leave. Talk to Mar to continue your quest. Yet another easy puzzle... Use Mar to jump from cog to cog to reach treasure chests and the exits.
Snag the treasures and continue moving until you reach the other end. Now use Mar to knock over the ice pillar. It will take some time to get to it, but just use the minimap to work your way around the area. Afterwards, proceed toward the music tower.
This puzzle is a little tricky. Talk to frog and it will play a tune. Out of 6 music notes available you must pick four in a certain order, that must match the ones that the frog played. Heres the order in which to go by: 4 2 After hitting all four notes, step on the white note that appears to reach the next level of the tower. Take care of the enemies you encounter and get ready for another puzzle. Use the mini-map to find a frog icon. Have Orphen WALK to the frog, and touch him. Running will cause the frog to move away from you. After you fight some more enemies, you'll face the final puzzle of this area. This is very simple. Watch the frog leap from stone to stone and mimic exactly what it does. Lets continue on to the next tower. BOSS FIGHT! Brisgar This boss just happens to be made out of ice. Attack it with the Hand of Pyro until its gone, then take care of the little Aegists it summoned.
Proceed up the tower.
Need I say anything about how to move on? Here's an easy puzzle! Use Mar to jump from platform to platform to reach the other side. Make sure you grab the treasures as well.
Here's what I consider one of the hardest, annoying, and most boring part of the game. Yes its worse than all of the dialouge. You get to use Mar to lead Judo back to the music machine. And Judo just happens to be as slow as that certain granny you always see on the highway. And you have to walk at the same pace as her. You must protect Judo from all of the enemies in this area as well. This sounds fun doesn't it? Tap the trianlge button so that Mar hits the enemies with music notes. At a certain point you'll be attacked from both sides. This is where all of the sleeping chimes, bug attractors, summoning bells, and all the other stuff comes in. Just be patient in this area. Repeat the process above until you are attacked by monsters. After you take care of them, Orphen and Cleo will show up. Took then longer than it did granny!
There are plenty of traps here that you should be use to by now. After you dodge the axes and falling spikes, head toward a fork in the path. Hit the switch and return to the fork and go the other way. Hit the next switch and duck into the wall while the ball passes you. Proceed. Now things get tricky. You must jump from platform to platform to get to the next switch, but there is lava below you and swinging axes in front of you. This where timing is your best friend. Jump when you feel that its safe and you should be fine. After you hit the switch, proceed to confront some tougher axes. Theres an axe at the entrance and one at the exit. Going into the room is easy. If you walk up close enough to the axe you can easily run right by. Getting out is a bit trickier. Try and get so close to the axe that it doesnt hit you, while standing on the side of the wall. If you time this right and your at the right angle, when it swings back you should be able to pass it without getting a scratch. Continue onward fighting and making your way through the labyrinth. You'll end up in a maze that is completely dark. Simply look at your minimap which is fully lightened. After this maze you'll have to solve another puzzle. Push the blocks into their corresponding holes. BOSS FIGHT! Beogray This thing is an eyeball that hides inside stone blocks...creepy. Watch his attack pattern and movements until you think your confident enough to take him on. When Mar starts playing the speacial song, attack the eyeball with whatever you have equiped. Eventually hewill start to move around fast. Wait until he stops then attack with your projectile.
We don't talk to everyone for once! That took long enough! Watch and listen to this long scene. That machine piss you off yet? Then show him not to mess with Orphen! FINAL BOSS! Gaia Here we are! The final boss. When you come anywhere near to dying, you better change your equipment and and return to battle so that you don't have to set through that long cut scene again. Be sure that you have the Hand of Pyro and the Bite of Lighting equiped. This guy has 5 parts: 2 arms, 2 blaster cannons, and a head. The easiest thing to do to take out the arms and then the head. Charge up to unleash 3-4 projectiles upon his arms at once. He uses his arms as a shield so don't attack them when he does that. There's a chance that if you do that he'll end up smacking you with one of his arms. After you've taken care of the arms, concentrate on the head and shield up when the blasters charge up. After every hit you make on the head Gaia will let out some tiny little bots for you to deal with. They're very annoying. When he unleashes them use the Bite of Lighting to do some damage to them. Repeat this process until you've beaten him. |
