Trance
Trance is Final Fantasy IX's version of Limit Breaks. Each of the main characters has a trance ability they can use. Only Zidane possesses skills to select from, while in trance.
Under your ATB gauge, you will notice a small bar. This is your Trance Bar. Each time you get hit, it will raise the bar. The more damage that you take, the more the gauge will fill. When the bar is full, you will go into Trance. Trance is different from other Limit Breaks, in the fact that you actually will get 2-3 turns using Trance. The only ways to interrupt trance is winning the battle, or being KO'ed. These are powerful limits, so use them as soon as you can.
As a character receives damage in battle, his or her trance gauge slowly fills. After the gauge is full, a trance ability can be used. These are different for each character.
Zidane has a unique set of skills called Dyne. These are powerful attacks that can damage either a single or all enemies. The more thieves skills he learns, the more Dyne attacks he will have. These are some of the most powerful physical attacks in the game. And they are even potent in the later boss fights. |

10 MP | Free Energy | Deals physical damage to the enemy. |
12 MP | Tidal Flame | Deals physical damage to all enemies. |
14 MP | Scoop Art | Deals physical damage to the enemy. |
16 MP | Shift Break | Deals physical damage to all enemies. |
24 MP | Stellar Circle 5 | Deals physical damage to the enemy. |
32 MP | Meo Twister | Deals physical damage to all enemies. |
48 MP | Solution 9 | Deals physical damage to the enemy. |
60 MP | Grand Lethal | Deals physical damage to all enemies. |
Dagger's Trance turns her Summon command into Eidolon. When she summons an Eidolon into battle during Trance, it will attack each of her turns after, rather than just one time. |

Vivi is allowed two Dual-Cast any spell he has learned. This is great in later fights, when magical damage is important. |
||
When Steiner goes into Trance, his damage is almost doubled the normal damage he inflicts. This is also true for his Sword Art, and Magic Swords. |
||
Having Quina Trance, makes it easier for it to eat enemies. It's Eat command gets changed into Cook, which means the enemy needs to be at 1/2 their total HP, VS the 1/4 HP they normally have to be. |
||
When Freya goes into Trance, have her use her Jump ability. While in Trance, she will stay in the air throughout the battle, and hurl multiple spears into the enemies each turn. |
||
Eiko is able to Dual-Cast any of her spells, when she goes into Trance. This is benificail, since she has both Curaga and Full-Life. It is something to keep in mind, during those harder fights. |
||
Amarant's Flair gets changed to Elan, when he Trances. The Flair skills stay the same as they are normally, but during Trance all the skills damage every enemy on the screen. |
