A character can be afflicted with various abnormal states from fighting with monsters and from traps in the Labyrinth.  There are 14 kinds of abnormal states that can affect party members.  Learn the characteristics of each one so that you will be able to deal with it quickly.

Fear Character is stricken with Fear, and will attempt to flee from battle.  May also cause AA's to fail.
This occurs from a monster's special attacks or from a Bishop's apprasial attempt on a item that could be cursed.

Death When a character's HP drops to 0, they die.  They will not receive EXP after battle.  If all members are killed, Game Over.
Cure using Reviving Potion, Carcass Spell, Cathedral Spell or going to the Temple.

Ash ASH occurs when you fail an attempt at reviving a character from DEATH state; usually happens with low level Carcass Spell w/ low Faith level.  Can also become ASH when a dead character is possessed by the Reaper.
Cure using Reviving Potion, Carcass Spell, Cathedral Spell or going to the Temple.

Lost When you fail to resurrect someone from ASH state, the character becomes LOST, and you lose them forever.
You cannot fix this, and if it happens to the Main Character, Game Over.

Possess
POSSESS is when one of your character's become possessed by the Reaper that randomly pops up in the Labyrinth (all except B3, 7 & 9).  They will glow reddish-pink, can see and enter Reaper Doors in some areas, and will no longer need a magical weapon to kill Undead.  If all characters become POSSESS, will unlock Possess AAs in battle.
Cure by going to the Temple.

Additional Info ~ It seems that after all your party members become possessed, it is possible for a character to become possessed more than once.  Several things could happen including:
  • 1st Possession - Character becomes possessed; marker glows pinkish-red.  All characters possessed, screen glows pinkish-red.
  • 2nd Possession - Character dies.  Status becomes Possess/Dead.
  • 3rd Possession - Character is turned to ash.  Status becomes Possess/Ash.
  • 4th Possession - Character is lost... gone... poofed from the game.  Self explanatory.
When you kill the Reaper on B10, his possessing forms will disappear.  If you haven't gotten the Reaper doors or experienced Possess AA's yet, then don't kill him yet.
